It's crazy what happens when you actually play a good game.

Huh? Whuh? Cave Story?

Cave Story is a jumping-and-shooting action game.
Explore the caves until you reach the ending.
You can also save your game and continue from where you left off.
Cave Story is a game, released on the 20th of December, 2004. It's, as described, a game where you explore a Cave to experience a Story. In fact, as aptly named as it is, the main appeal of the game lies in two points:

Cave

Cave Story is a Metroidvania-esque game, with kinda non-linear progression and an amount of freedom of where to go. Its areas are somewhat connected and has some sidequests.
Okay, breaking off of that. It's not false that it's a Metroidvania game, but it's necessarily a lot more linear than its brethen due to its second point (which will be seen in a moment). Its gameplay style is a lot more similar to a Mega Man game: run, jump and shoot with a variety of different weapons, going from zone to zone.
Guns, and shards, and bats.
Though, this doesn't make justice to just how gratifying it is to destroy anything in your path with your higher-powered weapons. And the method of reaching these higher-powered weapons is simple: enemies drop yellow triangle shards, the Experience Points, which you can collect to upgrade (mostly...) your weapons up to 3 levels. This creates a simple system: defeat enemies, get rewarded immediately. You also get the opposite to this: if you get hit, you lose some of the experience on the current weapon. This creates a struggle to keep your weapon levels up, prompting better play, giving better rewards. It's simple!

Story

Now, this might not seem like much of a game to have a noteworthy story, but just trust me on this one.
You wake up in a cave.
ow
Amnesiac and seemingly lost, the protagonist awakes in a dark cave (!!). With no sign of progression, you can only go down, getting (stealing) your first weapon and with it, you can escape the cave only to find yourself in yet another, wider cave. This is where you'll find the first Funny Creatures of the game: the Mimiga. And you'll crash directly against them from above. From there, you'll find yourself interwoven with the fates of these rabbit-like Things as they're being taken away one by one by hand of a mysterious Doctor and its lackies, which you'll see a lot of.

This one is more of a personal observation, but I believe the highest point of the story of Cave Story is simply seeing every character have some sort of role and influence, some way of having their fate linked with yours. Did I mention there's multiple endings?
